The following list is something I stumbled on. I have not confirmed these to exist. I have seen some and know of some not mentioned.

Sorry I dont have any of them at the moment.

1. The first printing of the card shows a red and white Marlboro billboard, complete with Marlboro man, behind Randy's left ear in the background.

2. The second printing still has the entire billboard visible, but dark, reddish shading/shadowing covers Marlboro and the red and white of the sign. Very noticable next to the first printing. Entire sign is still COMPLETELY visible despite shading.

3. The next version still has the sign visible, but there's a black line through the middle of the word Marlboro with the tops of all letters in Marlboro still clearly visible.(you can still tell the sign says Marlboro)

4. This version still shows the red and white of the sign, but there is a black blob where the word Marlboro once was, no longer showing tops of letters.

5. The Marlboro sign is completely gone, but a black rectangle, exactly in the shape of the Marlboro billboard, CLEARLY sticks out from the rest of the black background.

6. The most common "corrected" version. There is absolutely no trace of the Marlboro sign ever being there at all.

Interview with Ross (BunchOBull) who posted his theory that other players were affected in the NNOF incident and it's his thread and pic of the sheet that led to the discovery of the other variations.

Interview:

1st off Congrats on making your theory known. As you know this is a huge find. I'm sure many collectors (myself included) are shaking their head thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?" It's surprising how many of these cards are obviously flawed and yet they have not been brought to light.

A: Thank you kindly. I can say, seeing the magnitude of some of these variations, it's a complete shock that the pieces to the puzzle have remained unconnected for nearly 20 years. However, a lot of '90s collectors, it seems a majority, are in the dark as to the characteristics that distinguish authentic and fake NNOF Thomas errors. That being the case, many folks failed to realize that the NNOF error is blackless beyond just the words "Frank Thomas." Understanding that fact is the first variable in the equation.

You have a website www.BigHurtHOF.com. Being a specialized player collector myself I know the feeling of making a new discovery that's in your niche. Explain the feeling once you finally saw the cards you knew existed.

A: It was certainly rewarding. I feel very fortunate to have my suspicions substantiated so quickly. At the same time, I've always felt that if the NNOF error was truly an "accidental" release, the new discoveries had to have been included in the accident. It was apparent that whatever caused the more famous error went beyond the borders of the Thomas card. How far, I wasn't sure, but I was fairly convinced that these cards existed.

It's my understanding you don’t own a NNOF. Have you been able to locate any of his "neighbor" errors?

A: That is true, I do not own a NNOF error. As a Frank Thomas player collector, that may very well be a hobby foul. Do I desire to own one? Most assuredly; however, the cost association hasn't been in my favor to this point. Likewise, at present time I do not own any of the newly discovered errors either. Fortunately, I have several collectors behind me who are working to help me obtain copies, and at some point in the future I hope to have an example of each. The collector known as Saucywombat who has substantiated the theory is included in that list, and he has been more help than I could have every dreamed of.

How long have you had this theory?

A: I can't put a definitive date stamp on it, nearly a decade I'm sure. For years I've heard the concept of a piece of cardstock, or some other obstruction, causing the NNOF error being tossed around. It seemed logical enough to me and I think my theory was just a natural result of that logic. I had been simply waiting around for an example to fall in my lap, but grew tired of not actively searching for these variations. Finding an uncut 1990 Topps Baseball Orange Sheet F was what opened the door to pursuing it.

Have you been approached by any publications or websites about these cards?

A: Right now, billripken.com is the first and only publication, online or otherwise, to contact me. I've seen the original Collectors Universe thread being tossed around other hobby sites though.

Anything you would like to add?

A: Definitely. If anyone has any information to add to the discussion, I hope they'll join the original thread found on Collector Universe. I think the experience has refreshed the appeal of a widely overproduced set, and I hope anyone who is interested enjoys the process.

Thank you for the opportunity to share a few of my thoughts.

------

Hopefully off all the people searching for these cards now, you're one of the collectors who obtain them all. You deserve it. Thanks for the interview. Happy Hunting, billripken.com

Hello, My name is Donovan. I was able to interview Dave (saucywombat) from CU who has been the 1st to post pictures of the NNOF "neighbors"(to my knowledge).

An interview the Ross (BunchOBull) will soon follow.

Interview-

Donovan- 1st off Congrats on looking thru your cards and finding the ones needed to make this theory true. As you know this is a huge find.

Donovan-Explain the feeling once you found the cards you were looking for.

Dave- I was excited and surprised. Excited because it adds to the story of one of the more famous sports cards in the last 25 years and a card that most people remember who were involved during the hobby’s height of popularity. Surprised because it would seem that these variations would have been brought to light sooner because of the massive and widespread distribution of this set and the collector interest in significant errors and the Topps brand. Also surprised that so many were in my possession, assuming their scarcity. I was also pleased that having these cards in #’d order had paid dividends.

Donovan-Do you own a NNOF?

Dave-I do not but have considered buying one in the past, mainly due to the “wow, I remember that” factor you could get from people. I spent those hobby dollars in other places though.

Donovan-If not, are you now looking for one to go with the others you have located?

Dave-I may be in the market now.

Donovan-Are you keeping the "NNOF neighbor" error cards you've found?

Dave-Definitely excited and will likely keep them. I did send an extra John Hart to Ross.

Donovan-Have you been approached by any publications or websites about these cards?

Dave-As of this moment no, but there has been a lot of excitement on the PSA board surrounding Ross’s theory and the actual appearance of these cards. That would be great if it were published somewhere, everyone has got a few 1990 Topps at least to look through, and maybe this will stir people’s interest in collecting and 1990’s cardboard.

Donovan-How long have you owned those 1990 Topps? Like everyone else who will find these cards in their common boxes I bet your pretty surprised they did not stick out before. Some are pretty obvious.

Dave-I was in 8th grade when these came out and everyone was collecting at the time. I remember getting on my bike and riding to Revco when I got $20 for a report card or holiday and picking up boxes, including Topps, for $17.50. That was a mountain of gum. My dad would pick me up a box when he made a trip to Sam’s Club for his business. Entering high school most people’s interest waned and some of my friends gave me their cards including their massive hauls of 1990 Topps. Since then they stayed at my parents’ house, have been in mini-storage, and currently occupy a spot in a corner of a closet in the kid’s play room. I have 2 3200 count boxes full and 2 rows of 5000 count with 1990 Topps Baseball. In numbered order no less.

I was surprised to find the McGriff AS card staring up at me in my Braves binder. As you said pretty obvious. Seeing the Jeff Russell AS card, I did remember thinking it was odd at some point in the past but not attaching any real significance to it. I had been out of collecting from about 1996-2006, and only had learned about “blackless” variations e.g. 1982 Topps, from the PSA boards upon my return. Seems that the Thomas is more aptly denoted a “blackless” than NNOF, maybe that’s why no one put 2 and 2 together. NNOF is more indicative of what I think people may have suspected up to this point – that Topps had intentionally altered the card to create a hobby demand. 1989-1990 was the height of the “error craze” after all. The recent findings seem to indicate a legitimate printing error.

Donovan-Do you have more 1990 Topps to sort thru?

Dave-Looks like I’m done with the Topps sorting. Before this the last time I touched them was to sort in a couple of hundred cards that turned up during the move to my current home about 5 years ago.

Donovan-Anything you would like to add?

Dave-I’m happy that Ross gave us all something we truly value in collecting and that’s a “treasure hunt”! I’ve had a blast digging through this old cardboard.

Donovan-Thanks for checking and locating the cards you have. Many collectors (myself included) are enjoying this discovery and cannot wait for all the facts to come out.

Happy Hunting,
Donovan

Will PSA grade "Cut Outs" ?

I have decided to build a large collection of error/correctted cards

No uncorrected errors nor any print errors (ex. tm variations, blank blacks, wrong backs, etc.)

legitamite error cards...

My collection is growing and I would like to have all of my collection graded by PSA

MY Question is that I do collect the Cut Out versions (ex. Joe D. stadium Club and Alex Gordon Topps)

Will PSA not grade this type of card ?

I ask because I have never seen any cutout PSA graded card nor any in their population list

thanks
