New theory about who wrote on Ripken's bat

Hey everyone. I'd love to get some feedback on two new ideas about the Ripken error card: 1) a new variation and 2) a new theory about who wrote the obscenity. (I just put up a 1989 Fleer "Master" error collection on eBay featuring cards related to both ideas.)

1) New Ripken error variation: "Faded"

The "Faded" variation refers to a printing error that appears to affect the entire set--an extremely light ink job across the front. Anyone who has opened a lot of packs of '89 Fleer knows that the fronts of the cards are sometimes bolder or lighter than normal. And occasionally a card is extremely bold/dark, as though it got too much ink, or extremely light, as though it didn't get enough ink. I don't know precisely how these cards were printed, but since colors were added in stages (as with all baseball cards, to my knowledge), then perhaps boldness was added in layers of ink too. Too much ink results in extremely bold/dark fronts. ("Double Die" cards appear to be cards with an extra ink layer that was also slightly off-center from the original ink layers.) Too little ink results in extremely light fronts--what I'm calling "Faded" variations. I've opened multiple cases of '89 Fleer wax, rack, and cello boxes. Of the 35 or so Ripkens I've pulled, only one met the extreme "Faded" criteria. For what it's worth, I've noticed that players from teams with a lot of orange in the uniform (eg, Astros, Orioles) seem particularly susceptible to being "Faded."

2) New theory on who wrote the obscenity

I'm calling this theory "new" only because I haven't come across it yet. Perhaps the theory has been spelled out somewhere. Anyway, as most of you probably know, Billy Ripken "confessed" in an interview with CNBC in December 2008, just before the 20th anniversary of the release of the card, that he wrote the obscenity on his bat. He claims that he wrote on the bat to distinguish it from other bats in the dugout for batting practice, chalking up the foul language to locker-room jargon. Based purely on circumstantial evidence and a nagging sense that Ripken's story doesn't add up, I think Ripken's confession is a smokescreeen to protect the real culprit: Pete Stanicek.

According to the CNBC article, Ripken was interviewed by the Baltimore Sun's Tim Kurkjian (now with ESPN) shortly after the knob hit the fan and the public discovered the error cards in packs. Ripken was "angry and disappointed." The article quotes Kurkjian's interview further: "It appears I was targeted (by teammates). . . . I know I'm kind of a jerk at times. I know I'm a little off. But this is going too far." That doesn't sound like the response of someone who did it himself and was trying to lie. Three reasons why it doesn't make sense for Ripken to have done it himself. 1) He could've just written his jersey number "3" on the bat to distinguish it. His 1988 Fleer card (included in this lot) shows him holding a bat with "3" on the knob. 2) He was in the very long shadow of his big brother Cal, one of the most stand-up, no-nonsense guys in baseball. 3) His Dad was the coach at the time! (The photo shoot was during the 1988 season, Cal Sr.'s final year managing the Orioles.) Imagine the pressure on Billy to do the right thing on the ball field every day. Which teammate then is the best candidate for targeting and pranking Ripken?

Four reasons why Pete Stanicek may have authored the biggest error in modern sports cards.

1) Stanicek knew the victim and could be placed at the scene of the crime. Strangers don't typically prank each other. But friends (and sometimes enemies) do. The pool of candidates obviously begins with players on the Orioles team, who would've had access to the bats, and can be narrowed down quite a bit to players who were buddies with Billy and who had reputations for being at least light-hearted and playful, if not practical jokesters. Many players are very serious on the field, even in batting practice. It's hard to imagine, for example, the stone-faced Eddie Murray pulling such a prank. I won't pretend to know which players Ripken was closest to or which players were the team clowns. But I do know from my own playing days that baseball players often hang out in groups--pitchers and catchers, outfielders, infielders. Stanicek and Ripken, both infielders, appear to have been friends. Both were young and relatively new to the team in 1988. Both played for AAA Rochester in the O's farm system in 1987 and broke into the bigs around the same time, 1987-88. Assuming Stanicek's '89 Fleer card used a photo from the same afternoon, Stanicek was there at the batting practice in question.

2) Stanicek had probable cause. Guess which teammate was most responsible for moving Stanicek to left field and then keeping him off the major league roster? Billy Ripken. Stanicek was Ripken's back-up at second. Surely Stanicek knew the overwhelmingly bad odds of breaking up the much anticipated, too-good-to-be-true, holy double-play combo of brothers Cal and Billy under manager Cal Sr. Nobody not named Ripken was breaking up that family party. What Stanicek could do, however, was desecrate one of those Ripken "face"s.

3) Stanicek had a history. Look at Stanicek's '88 and '89 Fleer cards (both included in this lot)--both show Stanicek in the classic bat-on-shoulder pose with a marking other than the traditional jersey number on the knob. On his '88 card someone, likely Stanicek himself, wrote either a star followed by a "u" or a "5" followed by a star (depending on your orientation when reading it.) It's tempting to interpret the former option as a pre-Ripken, progenitor obscenity: "f**k you." If he wrote the equivalent of "5-star," perhaps he was being cocky, perhaps he thought he deserved more playing time. Now look at his '89 card--the knob says "STANO," presumably his nickname. Here's a guy with a history of writing unusal things on the knob of his bat, like playful phrases and nicknames.

4) Stanicek had the smoking gun--the black marker. Look at the '89 cards for Stanicek and Ripken. All the words are in black marker with similar size and shape. All the letters are upper case. No other players from the '89 Fleer team set show bats with unusual writing on them.

What happened to Pete Stanicek? He never played a big-league game after 1988. It appears that he now lives in the Chicago suburbs, teaching baseball at least part-time. With the media attention on the '89 Fleer Ripken error resurfacing around its 20th anniversary, perhaps Billy, brother of one of the most venerated, untarnished professional athletes in American sports history, decided to take one for the team and put an end to the speculation--and to any possible finger-pointing at a teammate whose progress to the Majors he made more difficult. I'll be the first to admit that I'm totally speculating. But my theory is consistent with Ripken's original reaction and makes more sense to me than Ripken's confession.

I checked the white on the knob under 10x magnification with a jeweler's lens, and compared this to the white on other areas of the card, including on the white field on the bottom right, and on the thin white stripes on the top of the card.

From what I could see under magnification the grains on all three areas were identical. Each area also had the same tone of white. If you were given pictures of the three white spots, you couldn't tell which white spot came from which white part of the card.

This indicates to me that the whiteout on the knob was applied on a negative of the card prior to printing, and thus the card is authentic. However, I've heard that actual globs of whiteout were used.

Any comments?

I doubt the bat has ever went to auction. I have almost reached the edges of the internet looking for info on this card,:) and have not heard anything. If it was to go to auction, people would have talked about it.

I'd love to see the bat. Bill has said he's unsure where it is.

I know that some teams sell the practice bats.

Possibly donate to local school teams ?

I imagine if someone saw it, before the card was released, trashed it,did one of the above or used it until it broke. I'm sure once the card hit, if someone had it, they would have said so. But you never know. Maybe Bill's last words will be..email BillRipken.com..*cough*...*cough*..I have something for them....

One could only dream.

PSA has a March special. 1972- present cards valued under $100 25 card minimum for $4.50 per card !!

I'm going to ask a guy I've piggybacked with a few times before and trust, if he's submitting. If so, I'll submit a few cards. Your card might be a problem though as the Beckett BV is $120 and SCD is $250 I believe. But I think you paid $90 for it? I just posted that question on the thread and will update when a answer is rec'd.

I'll email you when another bulk sub pops up.

The one for PSA was just rec'd by PSA so I assume they wont do another for a month or 2. That's if someone steps up to orgazine it.

The BGS one on FCB is mailing out to BGS in a few days. They plan to do more but unsure when.

Bulk basically means alot. On the PSA message boards, they (collectors) have gotten together (twice recently) appraoched the President of PSA and worked a deal ($5 per card) if they submit a certain amount of cards. Then everyone sends their cards to whoever is in charge of the submission (a standing PSA member)and they send them to PSA and await the results. Not bad for $5.

On FCB (Freedom Card Board) they did the same with BGS (Beckett) at the same price point.
